Willis Dale Dankert, 78, of Palmer died Saturday, June 6, 2015 at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer. Reverend Thomas Clark will officiate. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer with military honors by the Burton Beyer American Legion Post #120 of Palmer.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the church in Palmer.
Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church, Palmer Fire Department or Palmer Rescue Squad.
Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer is in charge of arrangements.
Willis entered this world on February 4, 1937 to parents John and Lauretta (Nietfeld) Dankert.
On February 21, 1937 he became a child of God by baptism and on June17, 1951 he was confirmed in the Christian faith at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer, NE.
He attended grade school at District 31 in Loup Valley and graduated from Palmer High School in 1955.
He served in the Nebraska National Guard from November 1958 to his discharge in November 1964.
On June 24, 1962 he married Anita Haefner in La Crosse, WI. They were blessed with 6 children.
He enjoyed farming with his father on a farm 5 miles northeast of Palmer. He continued farming there until moving into Palmer in 1986. In the fall of 1986 he became custodian at Palmer Public School. He worked in that capacity for 10 years. He worked for a couple years at Bosselman Truck Plaza and then was employed at Meyer Oil and Eilers oil. After retiring he helped out at Dave's Do It Best and Friedrichsen Seed and Feed in Palmer.
Willis liked moving snow in the winter and fixing lawn mowers and sharpening blades in the summer to help many of the widows in town and in the area.
Willis's passion in life was restoring antique tractors.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Burton Beyer American Legion Post #120, both of Palmer and the Lone Tree Antique Tractor Club.
He is survived by his wife, Anita; a daughter, Sharon and her friend, Garold Dunham; of Grand Island, two sons David, his wife Brenda and their children John, Sarah, Luke, and Hannah all of Grand Island; and Jim Dankert, his wife Laura, and their children Carli, Zachary, Kylie, and Jacob of Lockport, IL; daughter-in-law, Mikelle Dankert, her daughter, Paige Dankert and Paige's fiancé©, Cody Wooters and their son Payton. He is also survived by one aunt, Wilma Kellogg living at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island as well as many cousins.
Willis was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John; a stillborn daughter, Janet and stillborn son, Frank.
