William "Bill" A. Van Horn

William "Bill" A. Van Horn, 82, of St. Paul died Wednesday, November 06, 2013 at Brookefield Park Nursing Home in St. Paul after a courageous battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Randy Dilts will officiate.
A time to greet family and friends will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Inurnment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with military honors by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Bill was born October 18, 1931 to Elwood and Golda (Alexander) Van Horn in Loup City, Nebraska.
In 1936, he moved at a young age with his family to a farm southwest of St. Paul. He attended a rural school near his home and in 1944 his family moved into St. Paul. He attended St. Paul High School where he graduated in 1948.
After high school, he began working for the Nebraska Department of Roads as a maintenance worker.
He entered the U.S. Army on July 8, 1952 at Fort Carson, CO. He then served in Korea until his discharge on April 13, 1954.
Upon his return from the service he was again employed by the Department of Roads working for the road engineers.
Bill was united in marriage to Theda Chancellor on September 23, 1956 at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul.
The couple lived in St. Paul where Bill continued his work with the Department of Roads until 1966 when he began working for the Postal Service. After 25 years he retired in 1991.
Bill and Theda continued to live in St. Paul where they were involved in volunteering, delivering commodities for 15 years and meals on wheels for 11 years. The couple loved to travel, especially to Ireland. They visited all 50 states, most of the provinces in Canada, many countries in Europe, and they enjoyed cruises. They also liked to take bus tours.
Bill enjoyed using wood to make different decorations and items, watch the birds and squirrels in the back yard and reading westerns.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul and the Eagles Club in Grand Island. He served on the Legion's drum and bugle corp.
Survivors include his wife, Theda of St. Paul; nieces and nephews, Richard and Sandy Payton of Grand Island, Bob and Debra Payton of Las Vegas, Kathy and Richard Galusha of Central City, Butch and Becky Payton of Tulsa, OK, Dwana and Larry Rice of Grand Island, Del and LaDonna Van Horn of Tulsa, OK, Vicki and Tom Powers of North Vernon, IN, Debra and Jerry Saunders of Salem, OR, Michelle Brask of Lake Stevens, WA, Leslie and Lynn Brown of Cheyenne, WY, Michael and Lisa Chancellor of North Carolina, Scott and Laurie Miller of Nickerson, KS and Kari Miller of Oklahoma; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gary and Ali Chancellor of Wheatland, WY and Helen Campbell of Lake Stevens, WA; and numerous great nieces and nephews and cousins.
He is proceded in death by his parents; a brother and sister-in-law, Dwaine and Donita Van Horn; a sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Ray "Dutch" Templin; sister-in-law, Joyce Alexander, brother-in-law, Bob Campbell, two nephews, Kenneth Payton and Dean Miller, and two great nephews, Sean and Shane Payton.
