William C. "Sam" Davis, 87, of Palmer died Monday, October 25, 2010 at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer, followed by a lunch at the Palmer Legion Club. The Reverend Martin Leeper will officiate. There will not be any visitation.
Military honors at graveside will be presented by the Burton Beyer American Legion Post #120 of Palmer.
Memorials are suggested to the Palmer Rescue Squad.
Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Davis was born February 22, 1923 in Palmer to Ben and Anna (Novotny) Davis. He grew up and lived in Palmer, attended Palmer Public Schools where he graduated in 1941.
Sam entered the U.S. Navy in 1942. He served on the USS Calvert in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. He received his discharge in 1945.
He was united in marriage to Carolyn June Forbes on August 20, 1946 in Central City. The couple briefly lived in Hastings before moving to Palmer where he farmed, then worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island and for the Village of Palmer before retiring in 1985.
Sam was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Burton Beyer American Legion Post #120, both of Palmer.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time at the Loup River and having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren visit.
Survivors include his wife, June of Palmer; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Bill Davis and Rick and Jill Davis all of Palmer and Randy Davis of Las Vegas, NV; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sami and Lee Doncheske of Palmer and Rebecca and Jamie Plambeck of Hastings; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; and a brother, George Davis of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Carole Joseph; five sisters and four brothers.
