Walter J. Hilmer

November 13, 1930 — January 30, 2015

Walter J. Hilmer, 84, of Grand Island, formerly of Boelus died Friday, January 30, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society in Grand Island.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at the Cairo United Methodist Church in Cairo. The Reverend Cathryn Love will officiate. Interment will be in Ebenezer Cemetery, north of Boelus with military honors by Schipman Mogensen American Legion Post 201 of Boelus.

Visitation will be held on Friday, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the church in Cairo.

Memorials are suggested to the Dannebrog Boelus EMT's.

Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is taking care of the arrangements.

Mr. Hilmer was born November 13, 1930 on a farm north of Boelus to Edward W. and Dora (Seery) Hilmer, Sr.

He attended school in Boelus and graduated from Boelus High School in 1948.

Walt served in the United States Army, serving two years in El Paso. After his discharge he returned home to farm.

He was united in marriage to Kathryn Beukenhorst on January 22, 1972 in Grand Island.

After retiring from farming in the 1980's he worked at different jobs in the area.

He moved to Grand Island in 2010 where he lived for the remainder of his life.

Walt enjoyed going to auctions and visiting with people.

He volunteered at the Nebraska State Fair and worked security at the county fair. He used to announce baseball games in Boelus and he liked to watch whatever baseball or football games may be on television.

Walt had served as an EMT for the Dannebrog-Boelus EMT's and was a 50 year member of the Schipman Mogensen American Legion Post 201 of Boelus.

Survivors include a son, James Hilmer of San Jose, CA; a daughter and son-in-law, Lora and Craig Clapper of Omaha; a brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Edna Hilmer, Jr. of St. Paul; and a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Ronald Obermeier of Cairo.

He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and a brother Arnold Hilmer and his wife Marge.
