Virgie L. Cordes

Virgie L. Cordes, 77, of Wolbach died Saturday, July 02, 2016 at the Hooper Care Center in Hooper, NE.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolbach.  Reverend Marcia Dorn will officiate.  Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Wolbach.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.

Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Cordes was born January 26, 1939 in Wolbach to Charley and Irene (Galitz) Berney.

She attended Wolbach High School where she graduated in 1956.

Virgie was united in marriage to Richard Cordes on December 13, 1958 in Marysville, KS.

The couple made their home northeast of Wolbach.  To this union four daughters were born, Dawn, Ronnette, Carmen and Deirdra.

Virgie was active in many different organizations. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, she served as WELCA president, was circle chairman, and taught Sunday and Bible School in church.  She also belonged to the Wolbach American Legion Auxiliary, Logan Ladies Aid, 4-mile Club, was a leader for American Junior Legion Auxiliary, served as chairman for the Cystic Fibrosis Bike-A-Thon, and was a past member of the Town and Country Club.

Virgie had worked at Head Start and she was a news reporter for the Wolbach Messenger for a number of years.

She loved to be around her family and their activities, going on gambling trips a couple of times a year, reading, crossword puzzles and playing Yahtzee.

Survivors include her husband, Richard of Wolbach; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Dawn and Ken Miller of Grand Island, Ronnette and Alan Schneider of Schuyler, Carmen Potratz of Wolbach and Deirdra and Kirk French of Hooper; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Joyce Berney of Wolbach; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Loyla and Ron Vogel of Davis, CA and Kathy and Charles Houtby of Wolbach; an aunt Mary Galitz of Oakland, IA and an uncle Herbert Galitz and his wife Delores of Hastings; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Donald and Jody Cordes of Prosser, JoAnn Abboud of Naples, FL and LaVonna Berney of Hastings; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, a brother, Galen Berney; and two brothers-in-law, Ronald Cordes and Ronald Abboud.
