Viola J. Burke, 82, of Wood River formerly of the Genoa area, died Monday July 5, 2010 at Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday at Augustana Lutheran Church in Genoa. The Reverends Julie Rasi and Robert Carlson, Jr. will officiate. Interment will be held at Valley View Cemetery near Genoa. Visitation will be held from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m., Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Augustana Lutheran Church in Genoa or the Boelus EMT's or the St. Edward EMT's.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements.
Viola was born October 6, 1927 to Gertrude (Zittle) Poston at Stratton, Colorado. Her father passed away before she was born.
Her family moved to Denver and lived there for a short time and moved to Belgrade where she started school in Belgrade. They moved to St. Edward and Viola graduated high school in 1944. She moved to Omaha and worked for Union Pacific Railroad.
Viola was united in marriage to Edward Burke on January 18, 1948 in Omaha.
The couple moved to a farm north of Genoa and lived there until 1968 and then they moved to Columbus where they lived until 1985. She worked at Behlen Manufacturing in the account payable department. She also worked at Walgreens as a cashier in Columbus after working at Behlens.
After her husband passed away, Viola moved into Cloverlodge Care Center in Genoa and she lived from 2002-2008. Shortly after she moved to Good Samaritan Center in Wood River and lived there from 2008-2010.
She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Genoa and a past member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus.
She is survived by one son & daughter-in-law, Keith & Lillian Burke of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Carol Benson & friend John Swanson of Dannebrog; one granddaughter Cindy Benson of Grand Island; step grandchildren, Lilliana, Yeimy and Maurcio; three step great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Donna Hanley and Patricia Montgomery and a son-in-law Ervin Benson.
