Mrs. Wells was born June 15, 1918 in Cotesfield to Rasmus and Axelina (Boilsen) Rasmussen.

She was raised in Cotesfield and attended grade school in lower District 48. She attended and graduated from Cotesfield High School in 1936.

On May 16, 1936 Verna was united in marriage to Chester Wells in Loup City.
The couple first farmed in the Cotesfield area and later in the Elba area for many years.

Hard work was a way of life on the farm where she cooked many meals for farm hands and family, milked cows in the early years, raised chickens and had a huge garden. She still found time for the things that she enjoyed; dancing, ceramics, needlework, baseball and traveling. Verna was very proud of her Danish heritage.

At Verna's place, flowers were always plentiful. She had long rows of zinnias, gladiolas, marigolds and petunias and even after she moved to Matelyn she still had many pots of beautiful flowers on her small patio. Birds around Verna's place never went hungry.

She was a member of United Methodist Church of Cotesfield where she held many offices and the Helping Hands Extension Club for many years. Verna was also a member of Carl Mogenson American Legion Auxiliary Unit 119 of St. Paul for 56 years and the Howard County Medical Center Auxiliary.

Verna loved her family and always had many friends. Through the years she was saddened by the loss of many going before her but always looked forward and lived life to the fullest. She was the ultimate caregiver and friend.

Verna is survived by two daughters, Donna Short of Omaha and Marlene Round of Bedford, TX; six grandchildren, Jack Round and his wife Nancy of Omaha, Mike Round and his wife Lisa of Overland Park, KS, Jim Round and his wife Gretchen of Geneva, IL, Jenny Round and her husband Sean of Little Elm, TX, Craig Short of Omaha, Troy Short of Wheatridge, CO; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Dean and Cookie Rasmussen of North Loup and Dennis Rasmussen of Lincoln; and a sister-in-law, Nila Rasmussen of Elba.
