Velma (Blanchard) Crist, 82, of Ainsworth, formerly of the Central City and Grand Island areas, died Monday, May 26, 2014 at the Brown County Hospital in Ainsworth due to complications from cancer of the larynx.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Delano Cunningham will officiate.
Visitation will be held from 8:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m., Friday at the funeral home in St. Paul.
Burial will be held in Cotesfield Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Humane Society or American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Crist was born October 1, 1931 near Cotesfield to Elwood and Rose (Donscheski) Blanchard.
Velma first attended school in Central City and then Scotia High School where she graduated in 1950.
She was united in marriage to Joseph Lahowetz in Cotesfield. The couple was married for 22 years. They lived in Grand Island where Velma was a homemaker and also did some babysitting.
The couple enjoyed entertaining and spending time family, friends and neighbors. Joe and Velma like to go dancing and play cards. Velma also spent time making ceramics.
Velma married Dick Crist and they lived in Wyoming for six years where they enjoyed camping and fishing. Velma worked in a nursing home while in Wyoming.
The couple moved to a farm near Johnstown, NE where they lived for 15 years.
Velma loved the outdoors and living on the farm where she helped milk cows, raised sheep and goats. She also had guineas, peacocks and bred shih tzus. She loved raising flowers.
Velma moved into Ainsworth in 2006.
She was a people person, helping take care of many people in their homes.
She enjoyed making people laugh and going to the Silver Circle in Ainsworth to visit with friends.
She was a great pie baker with sour cream raisin being her best. She liked to bowl, listen to polka and old country music, watch soap operas, and old television shows like Hee Haw.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Bob McMillan of Omaha; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Mike and Erin Lahowetz, Kevin and Tammy Lahowetz and Jeff Lahowetz, all of Grand Island; six grandchildren, Amanda, Tyler, Jamie, Ariel, Alia and Ceirra; three step grandchildren, Brooke, Briana and Brady; one brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Eileen Blanchard of Grand Island; and one sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Don Hughes of Scotia.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick Crist and a sister, Ellen Zabloudil Moxon.
