She grew up in the North Loup area and attended school at North Loup. She worked at the North Loup Café© when she was in high school. She graduated from North Loup High in 1947.

Following her graduation from high school, she worked at Bausch & Lomb Optical in Grand Island.

She was united in marriage to John J. Burns on March 7, 1953 in Grand Island, Nebraska. She worked as a homemaker until her sales job at Brandeis Store in Grand Island. She worked in retail for many years and retired from there. John passed away on December 5, 1984.

Thelma was united in marriage to Wayne Cook on July 5, 1985 in Grand Island.

She was a member of the North Loup United Methodist Church and served as the church secretary for many years. Thelma was a member of the Craft Club, Red Hats, Business Women, Home Extension Club, Quilt Club, and the VFW Auxiliary of Grand Island.

Thelma loved her family so much. She spent most of her time with her husband, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family spoke highly of her ability to quilt, sew and crochet. She could sew quilts, clothes, afghan's, alterations for clothing and many other items. Besides her top notch ability to sew she was quite a fashionable lady; she loved shopping and had quite a selection of jewelry including earrings and necklaces, as well as shoes and purses. Thelma enjoyed canning and cooking. She made the "best potato salad" in North Loup and made delicious choke cherry jelly and pickled beets.

Thelma's favorite holiday was Christmas, as her family reminisced about her having the best decorated and wrapped presents under the tree and she worked at Anderson Pharmacy wrapping Christmas gifts. She absolutely loved the Christmas time of year.
