Teddy Jay Steenson, 67, of Sarasota, Florida, died December 25, 2010, in Florida.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolbach. Reverend Joseph Javorsky and Vicar Casey Lieneman will officiate. Inurnment will be in Hillside Cemetery in Wolbach.

Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Steenson was born October 14, 1943 the son of Lawrence "Bub" and June (Myers) Steenson at St. Paul, Nebraska.

He graduated from Wolbach High School in 1961. He attended the University of Nebraska at Kearney (formerly Kearney State College), receiving his Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Business Education in 1965. He received his Masters Degree from Kearney State College in 1969.

Mr. Steenson taught at Hildreth High School from 1965-71. He then joined the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS) that serve dependents of the military and others outside the USA and launched a lifelong global teaching journey. He taught briefly in England, Afcent American High School in Brunssum, the Netherlands, and two years at Karamursel High School on the Karamursel Common Defense Installation in Karamursel, Turkey. He was then assigned to Okinawa at the Kubasaki Air Base where he taught at Kubasaki High School for 26 years. Most summers he returned to Wolbach to spend time with his family and friends, where he enjoyed visiting and playing cards.

He received his certificate to practice Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging, from the International School of Ikebana in Tokyo, Japan. He then went on to continue his studies and received his teaching (Sensei) certificate in Ikebana.

In 2001 he retired from teaching and moved to Sarasota, Florida, joining many former DoDDS colleagues in the area. He worked part-time in a local florist shop for two years. He was very active in his local chapter of Ikebana International, teaching and participating in many shows with his arrangements and those of his students. Mr. Steenson continued to be active with other DoDDS retirees, participating in and organizing many events.

Mr. Steenson enjoyed traveling and learning about the local cultures where he was stationed. He shared the experiences with family and friends through pictures, stories, and items that were indicative of the place and time. He went to many local areas of interest in Europe, including Ireland, Belgium, England and Germany. He traveled through Japan, Korea, Borneo, Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong and other areas of interest while in Asia.

In 2004 he was diagnosed with cancer.

He is survived by his mother, June Steenson of Wolbach; one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Harriet Steenson; an aunt, Leatha Cook; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bub; and grandparents, George and Josie Myers and Joe and Lena Steenson.
