Robert F. Thompson, 88, of St. Paul died Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Brookefield Park in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Randy Dilts will officiate.
Interment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.
A visitation will be held from 6:00- 8:00 p.m., Tuesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Robert was born December 10, 1925 to John & Lora (Skipper) Thompson in St. Liberty, Missouri.
He grew up in Missouri and attended a country school near Princeton and graduated.
Robert was united in marriage to Shirley Lawson on November 7, 1953 in Exline, IA. To this union five children were born.
The couple moved to Unionville, Missouri and several towns in Central Nebraska. They lived in Phillips for several years and in 1974 the couple moved to St. Libory where they owned the Lone Tree Gas Station.
For most of his life he worked as a herdsman for a dairy farm. He also worked for an Ostrich Farm, Smith & Sons Lumber in St. Paul and on a hog farm. Robert retired from working and the couple owned and operated a café© called Uptown Grill located in St. Paul for several years.
Robert always enjoyed his time spent with family and playing checkers with his grandchildren. He spent much of his time fishing, camping, playing cards, telling jokes, gardening, and his dancing Santas.
He is survived by his children and their significant others, Ron & Cheryl Thompson of St. Paul, Ed Thompson of Omaha, Pat Placke & Fred Massing of Grand Island, Cheryl Allard & Rod Rowe of St. Paul, and Jim Thompson of St. Paul; 23 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; and one sister and brother-in-law, Frankie & Bud Wetzel of Albany, OR.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley on October 31, 2011 and his brothers and sisters.
