Raymond J. Nowak

Raymond J. Nowak, 80, of Elba died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elba. Reverends Ray Kosmicki and Martha Voigt will officiate. Interment will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Elba. Military honors at graveside will be presented by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., with a wake service at 7:00 p.m., Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the Elba Fire Department or Rescue Unit or to the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery Fund.

Ray was born June 16, 1930 to Bert & Gertrude (Koslicki) Nowak in St. Paul.

He was raised in the Midway area between St. Paul and Elba. Ray attended school in Elba and graduated from Elba high school in 1948.

After graduation, Ray farmed with his father.

Ray entered the United States Army in April 15, 1952 and was honorably discharged on April 14, 1954.

He returned to Elba where he resumed farming.

Ray was united in marriage to Marjorie Jurzenski on February 23, 1957 in Elba. The couple made their home in Elba and first farmed north of town and then northeast of Elba.

Ray worked for the US Postal Service for 35 years. He first started as a substitute clerk and mail carrier. He then became a full-time mail carrier. He retired from the Post Office in 1990. However, during his entire service with the post office, Ray continued to farm.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Council and served on the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery Board. Ray was also a member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul for over 50 years. Ray was appointed as a director of the Twin Loups Reclamation District on May 29, 1979, serving as vice president from 1994-2001. He served on the Auditing Committee from 2001 until his retirement from the board in August 2009. He received a Lifetime of Commitment award in June 2009.

He is survived by his son, Mike Nowak of Elba; a daughter & son-in-law, Patty Nowak & Jeff Kane of Charlotte, NC; a brother & sister-in-law, Don & Yvonne Nowak of Donald, OR; a sister, Burdette Jacobsen of Elba; and a special friend and neighbor, Jean Poss of Elba.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margie on April 7, 1983; and two brothers Robert & Evert Nowak.
