Phyllis W. Scofield

Phyllis W. Scofield, 86, of Dannebrog, died Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog. The Reverend Robert Carlson, Jr. will officiate. Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m., in the Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 4 - 8 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.      Memorials are suggested to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, the Dannebrog Booster Club, or the Dannebrog Hike and Bike Trail.

Mrs. Scofield, daughter of William and Lizzie (Koch) Windolph, was born July 5, 1921 in Grand Island.

Phyllis was three years old, her father died. She was raised by her stepfather, Albert Scarborough.

She grew up in Grand Island and north of St. Paul. Phyllis attended St. Paul Schools where she graduated in 1938. Following graduated she worked at the dime store for Levi Johnson.

Phyllis was united in marriage to Virgil Scofield on August 28, 1940 in St. Paul. The couple then moved to Dannebrog. She worked as a cook for the Dannebrog Public Schools and then at the State Bank of Dannebrog until her retirement in 1985. During this time she pursued undergraduate studies in business at Kearney State College. The couple continued to live in Dannebrog. Following Virgil's retirement they opened the Purple Plum gift shoppe in Grand Island.

Virgil died on January 20, 1998. Phyllis continued to live in Dannebrog for awhile before moving to Grand Island, then to Matelyn Retirement Community in St. Paul and then to the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Phyllis enjoyed genealogy, concerts, dancing, music and traveling. She was a volunteer for the Dannebrog Booster Club and the Hike and Bike Trail.

In 1996, Virgil and Phyllis were named king and queen of the Grundlovs Fest in Dannebrog.

Phyllis was an active member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog. She was also a member of the Andrew Chapter #41 of the Order of the Easter Star, the Platt-Duestche, and the Genealogy Society of Grand Island. She served on the Dannebrog Housing Authority Board for many years.

Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Val Jean P. and Dr. Duane Lemburg of Littleton, CO, Vicki L. Madsen of Grand Island and Rene` C. Simdorn of Dannebrog; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Kent Lemburg of Denver, CO, Kandiss and Brad Forsyth of Littleton, CO, Kori Lemburg of Lone Tree, CO, Brent and & Monica Madsen of Hebron, NE, Brandee and K.C. Welty of Grand Island, Jason and Angela Simdorn of Dannebrog, Heather Simdorn of Indian Rocks Beach, FL and Hiliary and Wayne Glover of Hillsboro, OR; seven great-grandchildren, Kaedyn and Kamryn Forsyth, McCall and Maxwell Madsen, Paislee Welty and Samantha and Tanner Simdorn; one nephew, Gayle Windolph of Newnan, Georgia, one niece, Beverly Kunze of Owasso, Oklahoma and a sister-in-law, Lillian Windolph of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Virgil; a brother, Harold Windolph and a son-in-law, James Simdorn.
