Paul Arterburn
February 18, 1927 — November 11, 2016
Paul Arterburn died on November 11, 2016 at the age of 89. He was a lifelong resident of St. Paul, Nebraska. He was born on February 18, 1927 in Omaha. He was the only child of Pauline Paul Arterburn and Carlos E. Arterburn.
He attended St. Paul High School and subsequently the University of Nebraska. He married Marjorie Nielsen. They have been married for over 70 years and remained together till the end.
He worked most of his adult life at St. Paul National Bank. The bank was founded in the 1800's by his grandfather N.J. Paul and remained in the family for over 100 years. He rose to the position of President and Chairman of the Board, positions he held until his retirement in 1984. Paul's grandfather N.J. Paul, who was a surveyor for the Union Pacific, along with his brother J.N. Paul were founding fathers of St. Paul.
Paul was an avid hunter, a passionate fan of the Cornhuskers, and an accomplished trapshooter. He also loved riding his BMW motorcycles which he did until age 85. He frequently traveled throughout Nebraska and many of the lower 48 states. Paul was a member of the Hastings Valley Scottish Rite. He was recognized for his more than 60 years of service as a Knight Templar, as a Master Mason and as a Royal Arch Mason. He was a Master of the Royal Secret of the 32 Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Paul was a long time member of Shriners International thru the Tehama Shriners. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. He also served the community as a city councilman and as a member of the school board. He was a kind and generous man who quietly gave to those in need without any desire for public recognition.
Paul and Marge also spent many of their retirement years extensively traveling throughout the world. They visited more than 70 countries spread throughout every continent.
Paul is survived by his wife Marjorie. He is also survived by his sons, Butch, of St. Paul and James, and his wife Susan, of Lafayette, Louisiana. His grandchildren include Butch's son Patrick, and Jim and Susan's children, Abigail of Beijing, China, Michael of Fort Worth, Texas and Tanner Sargent of Lafayette, LA.
Paul was cremated and his ashes will be interred in the family plot at Elmwood Cemetery in a small private family ceremony. Memorials should be directed to the donor's choice.
