Oren Lavern Abbott, 88, of Palmer, left the loving arms of his family on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at the United Methodist Church in Palmer. The Reverend Martin Leeper will officiate. Burial will be held in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer with military honors by the Burton Beyer American Legion Post #120 of Palmer. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer is in charge of arrangements.
Oren was born July 3, 1922 at Mascot, Nebraska to Lawrence & Margaret (Paehlmen) Abbott.
He moved with his family to the Lexington, Nebraska area where he received his education.
In 1940 he then moved to Cozad. He bought a truck and was in the trucking business.
He met and married Mildred White on October 21, 1942 in Lexington. This marriage was blessed with three daughters, Vicki, Sandi, and Debra.
Oren entered the Army on November 9, 1942. He was injured and was medically discharged in February 1944.
He started in the honey bee business in July 1952 and moved with his family to Palmer in July of 1959 where he continued the business. Oren retired in 1980 from the bee business. He then built, owned and operated Country Package store until 1988 when health reasons made him retire.
Oren moved to the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island in January 2009 and later that year he moved to the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Oren loved to garden, raise flowers and the couple liked to square dance.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Palmer and a permanent member of the Burton Beyer American Legion Post #120 in Palmer, where he served as commander for a number of years. He was very active in the Legion. He was also a permanent member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Oren enjoyed his beekeeping business, gardening and flowers as well as square dancing.
Oren leaves to mourn his wife, Mildred of St. Paul; three daughters & two sons-in-law, Vicki & LeRoy Zehr and Sandi Schlueter all of Palmer and Debra & David Swadley of Creston, Iowa; eight grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and a sister Viola Bevard of Colorado.
He is preceded in death by his parents; five brothers Earnest, Clifford, Clarence, Chester and Amos Abbott; a sister, Altra Patton and a son-in-law, Jack Schlueter.
