Wilbur D. Nielsen, 65, of Grand Island died March 12, 2009 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Thomas Hyde will officiate. Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Wilbur was born November 12, 1943 to Robert & Anna (Mortensen) Nielsen at Cotesfield, Nebraska. At the age of one he moved to St. Libory where he grew up.
He attended St. Paul High School.
He was united into marriage to Connie Layher on June 5, 1965 at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. In 1970, the couple moved to Grand Island.
Wilbur worked for the City of Grand Island Parks & Recreation Division for 30 years. He also owned his own lawn service for 5 years.
Wilbur dearly loved his grandchildren. He spent a lot of time outside and took pride in his lawn and garden. He loved to play penny slots and play cards.
He was a loving husband, father, and grandpa. He will be truly missed by his family.
He is survived by his wife, Connie of Grand Island; one daughter and son-in-law, Kellie & Kevin Brittain of Grand Island; two grandchildren, Chelsie & Zachary Brittain; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald & Mary Nielsen of St. Libory; one sister, Alda Boehle of St. Libory; sisters-in-law & brothers-in-law, Jackie Nielsen of St. Libory, LaVonne Hansen of Seward, Loretta & Lawrence Kowalski of St. Paul; and several nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Jeffrey Alvin Nielsen; three brothers Robert, Arild & Mick Nielsen; three sisters and brothers-in-law Mary Jane & Alphonse Trentman, Annabel & Quentin Lynch, Norma & Doyle Funderburg; two brothers-in-law, Charles Boehle and Art Hansen; and his father-in-law & mother-in-law, Alvin & Alice Layher.
