Rosella M. Nelson, 89, of St. Paul died Sunday, October 5, 2008 at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. Officiating will be Ellen Campbell. Interment will be in the Pibel Pleasant Hill Cemetery east of Ericson near Pibel Lake. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Howard County Community Hospital or the Wheeler County Foundation.
Rosella was born August 26, 1919 in Greeley County to Charles and Francis (Leimgruber) Hiatt.
She graduated from Spalding High in 1936. She attended Nebraska Central College on a Scholastic scholarship and taught at Pibel Grade School for two years.
She was united in marriage to Nels Nelson on March 15, 1941 at the home of her parents in Spalding. To this union, five children were born. They resided on the Nelson family farm in Wheeler County. In 1960 she returned to Kearney State College and was recertified to teach. She taught at Wheeler District 24 for five years and Ericson middle grades for two years, and then continued substitute teaching.
In 1978, Nels and Rosella retired and moved to St. Paul. They were members of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, elder and was active in the choir and Womens Bible study.
She was also a member of the Legion Auxiliary, Farm Bureau, Extension clubs, served as a 4-H leader and was a former member of The Rebecca Lodge.
Survivors include three daughters & sons-in-law, JoEllen & Bernard Kamphaus of O'Neill, Virginia & Dan Kruger of Las Vegas, Cheryl & Marlin Youngquist of Ozawkie, KS; eleven grandchildren, six step grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren; one brother-in-law, John & Freida Nelson; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Hiatt and Hazel Hiatt; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nels on July 21, 1986; a son, Clarence; a daughter, Stella; granddaughter Heidi Kahle; two brothers, Charles & Kenneth Hiatt; two step brothers, Allen & Roy; and four step sisters, Gladys Sparks, Ada Behrman, Anna Peet & Irene Steinwart.
