Lillian L. Haggart, 83, of Grand Island, passed away on January 25, 2009 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.



Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 8, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. Ellen Campbell will officiate. Inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. There will not be any visitation. Mrs. Haggart was cremated.



In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Haggart Family Scholarship Fund established to benefit students from St. Paul High School, c/o the Uni. Of Nebr. Foundation, 1010 Lincoln Mall, #300, Lincoln, NE 68508.



Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.



Lillian was born on April 30, 1925 in Asbury Park, NJ to Mr. and Mrs. Fred von Wieding.

She attended Andrew Jackson High School in St. Albans, NY where she graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1942.



She was a graduate of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY which she attended on a New York Regents Scholarship. She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority.

She met her husband, Richard J. Haggart of St. Paul, NE, while he was on a U.S. Navy V-12 program at Cornell during World War II. They married on March 24, 1946 and returned to Lincoln, NE where Richard finished law school.



Following graduation from law school they relocated to St. Paul where Richard went into private law practice with his father, Ralph A. Haggart.



Lillian worked for the St. Paul Public Schools for 30 years where she served as Administrative Assistant/Bookkeeper to four successive Superintendants of Schools. She was integral to the School System's transition to computerized books and records. In 1988, she was honored by the School Board for her dedicated service to the students, staff and patrons of St. Paul Public School.



In 1999, they moved to The Riverside Lodge in Grand Island, NE. Her husband Richard died October 4, 1999.



She was President of her St. Paul PEO Chapter, Secretary of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Auxiliary Unit #119 in St. Paul, Vice Chairman of the Howard County Republican Party, Worthy Matron of Eastern Star, Secretary of the Council of Job's Daughters, member of St. Paul Presbyterian Church and Sunday school teacher for many years.



She was an avid cribbage player and was a frequent winner in a multi-county cribbage league. For nearly 27 years, she was a member of a Women's Bowling team that competed in both Nebraska State and International Bowling Congress tournaments throughout the country. She also loved knitting, crocheting, playing bridge, reading mysteries, traveling, collecting coins, and playing golf.



Survivors include a son, Douglas, of Lincoln, NE; a daughter, Veronica (Roni), and a son-in-law Charles Work, of Stevensville, MD; a grandson, Andrew Haggart Work, and three step grandchildren.



She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard of over 50 years, and her parents.
