Mrs. Laurine Jess

Laurine Jess, 90, of Scotia died Thursday, March 12, 2009 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.



Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, at the United Methodist Church in Scotia. The Reverends Bruce Phillips and Martha Voigt will officiate. Interment will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Monday, at the church in Scotia.



Memorials are suggested to the Scotia United Methodist Church or the Scotia EMT's.



Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.



Mrs. Jess was born November 18, 1918 near Lance Creek, WY to Andrew and Emma (Heinrichsen) Nelson.



Laurine was raised on the Nelson Homestead ranch near Lance Creek. She attended schools in the Lance Creek area. After her schooling, she worked in the cookhouse in the Wyoming oil fields.



Laurine was united in marriage to Laverne Jess on March 10, 1936 in Hot Springs, SD. They moved back to the family farm in 1942. To this union was born six children, Larry, Laretta, Janet, Judy, Randy and Rodney.



She was active on the farm with her husband Laverne until 1959 when he bought the Scotia Hardware store. Laurine worked with her husband in the store until selling it in 1968.

Laurine enjoyed gardening and flowers, crocheting and embroidery, fishing, traveling, and having coffee with her friends. She loved to play the organ. She was a great cook and took pride in her home and family.



She was an active member of the Scotia United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.



She was also a member of Lamertine Card Club.



Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Mary Ann Jess of Johnson Lake, NE, Randy and Debbie Jess of Tobias, NE and Rodney Jess of Scotia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Tom Fields of Tonganoxie, KS and Judy and Leonard Williams of Grand Island; a son-in-law, Ron Wells and his wife Bonnie of Cotesfield.; sixteen grandchildren; and twenty two great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Linden and Anna Nelson of Torrington, WY; and three sisters, Betty Cantrell of Glenrock, WY, Violet Kurtz of Englewood,CO and Ramona Wroblewski of Whiting, NJ.



She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Laverne on November 9, 2007; a daughter, Laretta Wells; a grandson, Joe Einspahr; a great-grandson, Jacob Canfield; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Jess; four brothers, Fred, Elmer, Melvin and Lester Nelson; and two sisters, Olga Maxwell and Pearl Nelson.
