Doris M. Voorhees, 89, of Grand Island died Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Thomas G. Hyde will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, from 5 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Voorhees was born June 13, 1919 in St. Paul to Ellis and Gertrude (Kasson) Klinginsmith.
She attended rural school through 8th grade and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1936.
Doris began her teaching career in rural schools in Howard and Hall counties. She attended Kearney State College where she received her degree. She was active as a teacher, substitute teacher and principal for 50 years. She taught and served as principal at Cedar Hollow District 3 near Grand Island for 12 years.
Doris was united in marriage to Orval Voorhees on May 20, 1950 in Golden, CO.
Mrs. Voorhees was an active participant in the social activities of the Doniphan Gun Club for many years. She was well known for the many meals she helped prepare and was especially known for her potato salad and pies. Doris enjoyed reading, playing bingo and was an avid doll collector.
After her retirement, she worked for Mid Nebraska Individual Services and at Fonner Park.
Doris is survived by a son, Randy Voorhees of Alda; a daughter, Patsy Onatah of Wells, Maine; a brother and sister-in-law, Russell and Miki Klinginsmith of San Antonio, TX; a sister, Ruby Steffey of St. Paul and special sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orval; four brothers, Robert, Rex, Gerald and Jim; and three sisters, Frances Bragg, Evelyn Jones and Opal Gartland.
