Mr. Richard R. Bahensky

Richard R. Bahensky, 76, of St. Paul died Friday, August 15, 2008 at the Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.



Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home. The Reverend Brian Houston and Gary Spilger will officiate. Inurnment will take place at a later date. A book signing and a time to visit with the family will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, from 3 - 5 p.m.



Memorials are suggested to the Howard County Community Hospital Foundation or to the St. Paul EMT's.



Mr. Bahensky was born May 14, 1932 in the Gage Valley area of Howard County to Raymond and Eva (Grossart) Bahensky.



Richard was raised in the Gage Valley area and attended school there until attended St. Paul Public Schools where he graduated in 1949. He then farmed in the Gage Valley area for six years.



He was united in marriage to Shirley Spencer on June 19, 1952 in Sidney, Iowa.



The couple first lived and farmed near Wolbach for one year. They then farmed southwest of St. Paul. They continued to farm in Howard County until he retired from farming at age 58 because of a disability.



Richard was dedicated to agriculture and conservation practices. He was very good at welding, designing and repairing his own equipment. Richard did some land leveling and also did some work measuring land for the ASCS office.



He loved family reunions and time with relatives, telling stories and enjoying the company of friends and family. He loved Nebraska sports and enjoyed watching and being involved in all types of sports, including playing golf and in his early years playing baseball in the Sherman-Howard Baseball League. He also coached amateur boxing. Richard also enjoyed fishing and hunting, reloading ammunition for his 257 and 270 firearms. He enjoyed taking his poodle, Maggie with him.



Richard received his pilot's license at the age 14.



After his illness was discovered, there were several events and milestones that he was trying to make including the birth of his great granddaughter, Sidney Nikole Stephen to Lisa and Dr. Jason Stephen, his great grandsons, Nicholas' kindergarten graduation and helping Nicholas learn baseball, his grandchildren Sara Berggren graduation from Creighton University and James Bahensky graduation from Anselmo-Merna High School and he was able to attend the graduation celebration of his granddaughter, Katie Bahensky from Plymouth Christian Academy in Plymouth, MI high school. He was also able to attend the weddings of his nephews, Ross Bahensky and Nathan Bahensky.



Richard was a member of the Young Farmer's Association.



Survivors include his wife, Shirley of St. Paul; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Mary Bahensky of Anselmo and Tom and Lydia Bahensky of Plymouth, MI; one daughter, Julie Bahensky of Ogalalla; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, Lisa Stephen and her husband, Dr. Jason and their children, Nicholas and Sidney of Lincoln, Sara Berggren of Omaha, James McLain Bahensky of Anselmo and Katie Lynn Bahensky of Plymouth, MI; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Cookie Bahensky of Lincoln and Dan and Beth Bahensky of Kearney; and one sister and brother-in-law, Judith and Ellis Rall of Denver.



He was preceded in death by his parents.
