Michael J. Schmidt, 83, of St. Paul died Tuesday, February 02, 2010 at the Seward Memorial Hospital in Seward.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with military honors by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. with a wake service at 7:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Schmidt was born September 30, 1926 in Spalding, NE to Robert and Frances (Polansky) Schmidt.
He was raised in Spalding and St. Paul. He graduated from St. Paul High School in 1943.
After his graduation, Mike entered the U.S. Navy on November 4, 1943. He served as a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class. During his service, he received the American Area Ribbon, Victory Medal, 1 Star in Asiatic-Pacific, Navy Unit Commendation, 5

Amphibious Corps for outstanding heroism during the seizure of Iwo Jima from February 19-28, 1945. Mike received his honorable discharge on June 1, 1946.
He was united in marriage to Marjorie Mae Fairbairn on November 30, 1946 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul.
The couple first lived in Omaha for five years. They farmed for 10 years in the Ansley and St. Paul areas before moving into St. Paul.
After farming, Mike worked for Clayton Peterson Chevrolet, the Texaco Station in St. Paul, and the Nebraska Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island. He later worked construction and then owned Mike's Texaco in St. Paul. After semi retiring, he worked at Jack and Jill in St. Paul.
After retirement, he liked to pick, clean and crack black walnuts, make homemade ice cream, do woodworking and gardening. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a 63 year member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119, both of St. Paul. At the American Legion he was very active, serving on the funeral military honor guard, taking tickets at the American Legion baseball games and many other activities. He was also a member of the VFW #1347 of Grand Island.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Robert (Bob) and Sharon Schmidt of Buckeye, AZ; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith (Judy) and Charles Schwartz of North Platte and Elizabeth (Betty) and Garry Dittmar of Utica; four grandchildren, Jon and his wife Rebekah Schmidt of Fort Worth, TX, Jamie and her husband Steve Rogers of Carmel, IN, Benjamin Schwartz of North Platte and Megan Schwartz of Gothenburg; six great-grandchildren, Hunter and Andrew Schmidt, Carson and Wyatt Rogers, and Aimee Rose and Jayden Schwartz; one sister, Roberta Spilinek of McCook; one brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Marjery Schmidt of Rawlins, WY; two sisters-in-law, Jane and her husband Jim Kasson of St. Paul and Arlene Henningsen of Omaha and a brother-in-law, Don McClellan of Palmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie on June 27, 2007; an infant sister, Mary Josephine; sisters and brothers-in-law, Angela and Leonard Arehart and Roselia and Lester Arehart; sister-in-law, Delores McClellan and two brothers-in-law, Carl Henningsen and Gerald Spilinek.
