Joseph P. Coufal, 86, of Cotesfield died Thursday, February 14, 2008 at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.



Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Martha Voigt will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia with military honors by Rueben Beck American Legion Post #150 of Scotia. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials suggested to the family's choice.



Mr. Coufal was born June 21, 1921 to Leopold A. & Blanch (Halla) Coufal in Cotesfield.



Joe was raised and attended school in Cotesfield. After his schooling he farmed with his father. He entered the U.S. Army April 18, 1945 where he worked as a construction machine operator. He received his discharge December 7, 1946. He returned to the Cotesfield area where he farmed.



He was united in marriage to Maxine Englebrecht on March 25, 1947 in Elba. The couple lived and farmed their entire lives in the Cotesfield area. After retirement in 1986, the couple continued to live on the farm where he helped his son Garland farm. He enjoyed raising cattle.



Joe enjoyed helping his son and son-in-law farm, visiting and playing cards with neighbors and friends. He and Maxine loved to go for drives and enjoyed dancing. Joe was willing to lend a hand to neighbors and friends.



He was a member of Rueben Beck American Legion Post #150 of Scotia.



Survivors include his wife Maxine of Cotesfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Garland & Sherryl Coufal of Cotesfield and Dale & Lavon Coufal of Ravenna; one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy & Jerry Jensen of Scotia; one daughter-in-law; Grace Coufal of North Loup; fourteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Lee & Joann Coufal of Monet, MO; and one sister Margery Conwell of Merced, CA.



He was preceded in death by his parents, one son Russell, one brother Ralph Coufal and two sisters Verna Beck & Blanche Hermsmeyer.
