Mr. James J. Schmidt

July 11, 1929 — January 27, 2010

James J. Schmidt, 80, of Omaha died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Military honors will be presented at graveside by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.

There will be a time to greet the family and sign the guestbook from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church on Saturday with a rosary being recited at 9:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church or to the Howard County Historical Society.

Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schmidt was born July 11, 1929 in St. Paul to Frank and Josie (Jaeger) Schmidt.

Jim attended St. Paul schools.

After his schooling, he worked for the Wells Brothers in Elba. He then drove a redi-mix truck for two years in Grand Island.

Jim entered the United States Air Force on March 2, 1951 serving in Korea. He received his discharge on December 7, 1953.

After receiving his discharge, he leased Kelly's Bar in St. Paul for one year.

Jim moved to Omaha where he worked in construction for Peter Kewitt as a carpenter for 27 years.

After his retirement, he continued to live in Omaha.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and playing cards down at the river with his family. He also enjoyed collecting clocks.

Jim was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Church of Omaha and the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.

Survivors include three brothers and sisters-in-law, Anton and Betty Schmidt and Clarence and Ernestine Schmidt, all of St. Paul and Ed and Rosemary Schmidt of Omaha and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Agnes Hansen, Helen Gdanitz, and Mary Schmidt and two brothers, Emil and Ernie Schmidt.
