Dennis "Coach" Hurlburt, 61, of St. Paul, formerly of Greeley died July 17, 2009 at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Vonnie Phillips will officiate. Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia. Military honors will be provided by the Arcadia American Legion Post 251. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Monday, at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Dennis was born August 2, 1947 in Ord to Dale and Lorayne (Sevenker) Hurlburt.
He attended Arcadia Schools and graduated from Arcadia High School in 1965. Dennis attended Kearney State College, graduating in 1970.
He was united in marriage to Kathy West on May 15, 1971 in Ansley.
Dennis entered the US Army on January 21, 1971. The couple lived in Germany for a year, they then moved back to the United States, receiving his discharge on October 25, 1972.
Dennis was a teacher and a coach of football, boys basketball, track and also served as an athletic director in Curtis and Greeley. He taught and coached in several different communities in Nebraska, including Giltner, Stuart, Pender, Clay Center, Curtis, Greeley and last fall in North Loup-Scotia.
He taught drivers education at Grand Island Senior High during the summers.
Dennis coached the 2001 Boys State Basketball Champions and the 2001 football state runner-up in Greeley and was the Grand Island Independent Coach of the Year in 2001.
Dennis's love for sports showed in different ways, from being a Husker Fan to playing head coach on Playstation with his oldest grandson. His tradition was to take his grandchildren to the Nebraska Red-White game.
He had other interests such as fishing, camping and his 1966 GTO.
His family and grandchildren were his life, attending their events when possible. He also enjoyed his mother's cooking.
He and Kathy recently renewed their wedding vows.
Dennis was a member of the United Methodist Church and American Legion, both of Arcadia. He was a member of the Nebraska Coaches Association.
Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Nikki and Moses Campos of Grand Island, Stacy and James Dugan of Greeley, and Jody Leslie and Shane Roach of Kearney; 10 grandchildren, Dylon, Kelsie Jo, Brock, and Colton Leslie, Mack Roach, Ryley and Allyson Dugan and Trew, Shylea, and Briella Campos; mother, Lorayne of Arcadia; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and DeeDee Hurlburt of St. Paul and Tim and Diana Hurlburt of Burwell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy on May 13, 2009; father, Dale; a brother, Terry Hurlburt; and grandparents, Frank and Anna Sevenker and Wes and Lottie Hurlburt.
