Dale May, 95, of St. Paul, formerly of Scotia died September 1, 2009 at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Thomas Clark will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with military honors by the Reuben Beck American Legion Post #150 of Scotia. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m., at the funeral home. Further visitation will be on Friday from 8:00 a.m. until service time.
Memorials are suggested to the Scotia Rescue Unit, Zion Lutheran Church in Scotia or to the Howard County Community Hospital Foundation.
Mr. May was born November 19, 1913 in Pauline, NE to Edgar and Maude (Stethem) May.
Dale received his education in Pauline, graduating from Pauline High School in 1931.
He then farmed near Pauline until March 1933. He then drove a gas transport until he entered the military.
He enlisted in the Army on October 3, 1941, serving in Western Pacific. Dale received his discharge on November 13, 1945, returning to Hastings where he was a truck driver for a bakery company, delivering bread in south central Nebraska and northern Kansas.
In 1947, Dale moved to St. Paul.
He was united in marriage to Helen Petersen on September 12, 1948 in St. Paul. The couple moved to Scotia where he worked at Bredthauer General Store selling meat, groceries and dry goods. He purchased the store in 1951. He sold the store in 1966 and began driving a semi truck hauling livestock until his retirement. After retirement, he helped Van Smith at the lumberyard in Scotia.
His wife Helen died on December 10, 2000. Dale moved to St. Paul in 2001 and to Matelyn Retirement Community on April 15, 2004. In August 2009, Dale entered Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Dale enjoyed fishing with his wife, pinochle, watching football and Major League Baseball.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Reuben Beck American Legion Post #150, of Scotia and the Forty and Eight.
Survivors include his god daughter, Nancy Shindle and her husband, Tim and daughters, Sarah and Katie of St. Paul; and several sisters-in-law, and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Helen.
