Mildred L. Stone

April 26, 1914 — October 17, 2016

Mildred L. Stone, 102, of Kearney formerly of Palmer died Monday, October 17, 2016 at the Mother Hull Home in Kearney.

Visitation will be from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 28, 2016 at Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer. A private family memorial service and interment will follow in the afternoon at Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer.

Memorials are suggested to Mother Hull Home in Kearney.

Mildred was born April 26, 1914, to William and Louise (Moravec) Prochaska on her family's country home near Palmer, NE

Her education began at Dist. 19 in Gage Valley followed by high school at Palmer Public, graduating in 1933. Until her death, she was the oldest living alum of Palmer Schools. She attended Nebraska Central College in Central City, taught several years at a rural school, and in 1938 earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

Years later, she attended Kearney State College for an endorsement in Library Science. She taught English, Latin, Drama, and General Studies in Tobias, Archer, Palmer, and Gardner Rural School.

On October 2, 1940, Mildred was united in marriage to Elmer Gottfrid Stone at her parent’s Palmer home.

They resided on their Loup Valley farm for over 50 years.  Mr. Stone preceded her in death on February, 29, 1988.  In 2003 Mildred became a resident at WELLife Assisted Living in Kearney and in 2010 moved to Mother Hull Home.

Mildred was a member of the Palmer United Methodist Church, Sunshine Circle, Adult Sunday School, and Loup Valley Homemakers Extension Club. She spent many years as a Sunday School Teacher and a 4-I-I leader of the Gingham Gals in Loup Valley.

Her interests included reading, sewing, gardening, quilting, crocheting rugs, and continually learning about history, archaeology, art, and literature.      Many community people were the recipient of her sharing fresh garden vegetables, fruits, flowers, and rugs.

She is survived by three daughters, Catherine (James) Tyson of Newton, IA, Rebecca Stone (Mark) Seiler of Kauai , Hawaii, and Deborah (Gary) Davis of Kearney, NE; one son, Steen (Rogene) Stone of Grand Island, NE; grandchildren; Eric and Joel Tyson, Piper Gibson (Josh Williams), Kristen (Robb) Missall, Christopher (Shannon) Davis, Nicholas (Audrey) Stone, and Kaelee and Ashley Stone; six great grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Billie Ruth Gee of Central City, NE; nieces, Patricia Prochaska of  Hastings, NE, Janet Koenig of Centennial, Colorado; and a cousin, Joyce Glynn of Central City, NE.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; two brothers, Harry Frank and William James Prochaska; and a sister, Wilma Marie Coomer.

The family sincerely thanks all caregivers, past and present, for their excellent and loving care of Mildred.
