Merlin F. Goering

September 19, 1915 — December 4, 2011

Merlin F. Goering, 96, of Kearney, formerly of St. Paul died Sunday, December 4, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Kati Salmons will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery with military honors by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.

Visitation will be held on Friday, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul or to the St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.

Mr. Goering was born September 19, 1915 in Palmyra, NE to Henry and Laura (French) Goering.

Merlin attended school in Cushing where he graduated from Cushing High School in 1933.

He then worked at Bartles Store in St. Paul.

Merlin entered the U.S. Army on November 12, 1942. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Merlin received his discharge on February 8, 1946.
After his military service, he returned and worked for a short time at Bartles Store. He then worked for Ulry Talbert Food Distribution Company of Grand Island as a salesman. He served as administrator at the Howard County Hospital for several years. He then owned and operated the Texaco Station in St. Paul for a short time before serving as Howard County Clerk.

After his retirement, he worked for Roger Goettsche helping install and repair lawn sprinklers.

Merlin enjoyed gardening, yardwork, fishing, hunting small game, and playing cards. He was known for his knowledge in trapping moles. Merlin was one of the largest blood donors for the American Red Cross.

He was very devoted to his grandchildren.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of St. Paul where he was a very active member. He was also a member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul.

Merlin is survived by two daughters & son-in-law, Nancy VanZandt of Kearney and Kathy & Paul Bollacker of Fort Collins, CO; four grandchildren, Shanna (Bollacker) Trottier and her husband Shean, Lindsay Bollacker, Jill (VanZandt) McCarville and her husband Adam, and Casey VanZandt and his wife Sasha; three great grandchildren, Amaya Trottier, Easton McCarville and Marcus VanZandt; one brother & sister-in-law, Don & Ada Goering of Fort Collins, CO; one sister, Doris Anderson of St. Paul and a daughter-in-law, Delores Goering of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; a son, Ron Goering and a brother, Darold Goering.
