Mary Jane Harder, 95, of Grand Island died Thursday, September 11, 2014 at the Nebraska Veteran's Home in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Grand Island. Reverend Don Buhrman will officiate. Interment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. with a wake service at 7:00 p.m. at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Education Foundation.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Harder was born April 18, 1919 in Omaha to Clarence and Ida (Maloney) Murphy.
She attended and graduated from Omaha Central High School.
Mary Jane then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, IA and graduated in 1944. While attending college she became the Homecoming Queen and also the Hobo Queen.
After graduation she taught school high school English in Fonda, IA.
She was united in marriage to Raymond Harder on January 23, 1946 in Storm Lake, IA.
She began her teaching career as a substitute teacher and then taught English at Grand Island Senior High until her retirement.
Mary Jane loved to read and watch TV and made great grilled cheese sandwiches. She loved animals, especially dogs and cats. She was active in the Grand Island Kennel Club. She served as a 4-H judge at the Hall County and the Nebraska State Fairs.
She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church in Grand Island. She was active in TRIAD and the Grand Island Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robin and Debra Harder; a grandson, Patrick and his wife, Angela Harder; and two great-grandchildren, Kaden and Riley, all of Grand Island.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond on April 22, 2002; a grandson, Michael Harder and a granddaughter, Jennifer Harder.
