Martha Maddox, 103, of St. Paul, formerly of Palmer died Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday at the First Church of Christ in Palmer. Nathan Hepner will officiate. Interment will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., at Jacobsen- Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul with further visitation held from 8:30-10:30 a.m., Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to First Church of Christ in Palmer.
Martha was born March 25, 1908 to Oliver and Lillian (Vandergrift) Keller at Palmer, Nebraska.
She grew up on a farm near Palmer and attended school at District #31. Martha graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1926.
She taught piano lesson for several years.
Martha was united in marriage to James "Elmer" Maddox on March 14, 1928 at Palmer, Nebraska.
The couple lived in Palmer, Burwell, Seneca and returned to Palmer in 1940. They farmed and ran a dairy for many years. Starting in the 1950's the couple wintered in McAllen, Texas. Her husband passed away May 8, 1981. Martha continued to winter in McAllen, Texas until she turned 94. She then moved to Riverside Lodge in 2001 and moved to Edgewood Vista. In October 2010 she moved to Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Martha was a member of the First Church of Christ in Palmer, Willing Worker's, she helped at Pibel Bible Camp. She was also a past Sunday school teacher and a choir director.
She enjoyed music, where she and her husband sang duets and sang in a mixed quartet for many years, she also wrote several songs and played the piano. She also enjoyed gardening and playing bingo.
Martha is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Richard & Beverly Maddox of Grand Island; six daughters & sons-in-law, Gwenalee Lewis-Main of Buckeye, AZ, Marlene & Delbert Wiegert of St. Libory, Betty & Daryl Holt of Scotia, Shirley & Edward Boltz of Dannebrog, Ramona Swanson of Minden and Sharon & Paul Oakeson, Jr. of Grand Island; 23 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elmer Maddox, three sons-in-law, Ken Lewis, Allen Main and Milton Swanson, two sisters Marie Walling and Velma Falk and two brothers Lavern & Charles Keller.
