Marie Suntych, 91, of Grand Island, formerly of Elba, died Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Martha Voigt will officiate. Interment will be in the Elba Cemetery in Elba. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Elba Community Center, Elba Fire Department or EMT's, or the Elba United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Suntych was born December 7, 1916 in Elba to Anton and Kate (Jares) Spilinek.
Marie was raised in Elba and attended Elba Schools where she graduated in 1935.
She was united in marriage to William Suntych on June 6, 1942 in St. Paul. The couple made their home in Elba. Marie worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island and as a switchboard operator for the telephone company in Elba.
Marie enjoyed gardening and canning, playing cards, cooking, especially her fried chicken and potatoes and gravy. Marie babysat for many nieces, nephews and other children in Elba, which she enjoyed very much.
She was a member of the Elba United Methodist Church and was a past member of the Elba Community Club.
Marie is survived by a great-niece, Judy Dugan and a nephew, Leonard Spilinek, who were her caregivers for many years, numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William on July 14, 1994; five brothers, Anton, Louis, Joe, George, Sr., and Richard Spilinek; four sisters, Agnes Matousek, Emma Curtis, Katherine Svoboda, and Blanche Svoboda; and an infant sister, Lucy Spilinek.
