Marie ?Scoopie? Bonifield, 92, of Grand Island died Thursday, October 04, 2007, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Texas. Inurnment will be held in Claude Cemetery in Claude, TX.
Memorials are suggested to the Heifer Project and Hospice.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Bonifield was born July 15, 1915 in Miami, TX to Martin and Luvicey (Edwards) Barton. She was raised in west Texas and graduated from Amarillo High School.
Marie was united in marriage to Murray Bonifield on April 1, 1936 in Amarillo, TX. The couple moved to California in the 1930?s. They then lived in New Mexico before returning to Texas. Marie moved to Dannebrog in 2003 and then to Grand Island in 2005 where she lived for the remainder of her life.
In Texas, Marie served on the Governor?s Commission on Aging. Marie was the head of a Senior Center in Texas where she was an advocate for senior citizens and their rights and also studied geriatrics. She was politically and socially active.
Marie traveled extensively and loved to read. She enjoyed being a member of the Big Texan Line Dancers, and was a yoga instructor. Marie and Murray liked to square dance.
She was a member of the Unity Church, a Course in Miracles and S.A.G.E.
Survivors include two daughters, Gale Pemberton and her life partner Peggy Lang of Dannebrog, and Mary Ann Thomas and her husband, Jim of Rocky Ford, CO; a son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Jill Bonifield of White City, OR; six grandchildren, Al Pemberton, Bonisue Pemberton, Pete Pemberton, Paige Mendicino, Joni Burr, and James Thomas; and eight great-grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Murray; a brother, Gordon Barton and a sister, Berniece Hollabaugh.
