Leona C. McHargue, 87, of Grand Island died Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Bickford Assisted Living in Grand Island.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Reverend Sheri Lodel will officiate.
There will not be any visitation, it was Leona's wish to be cremated.
A private family inurnment will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Humane Society or Aseracare Hospice.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Leona was born October 3, 1926 in Dannebrog to Jens A. and Christine (Larsen) Jensen.
She was raised near Dannebrog and attended country school north of Dannebrog at Turkey Creek. She then attended Dannebrog High School where she graduated in 1944.
After graduation, she worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammuniton Plant in Grand Island.
She was united in marriage to George McHargue on June 26, 1948 in Grand Island.
The couple first lived in Gothenburg, before moving to Central City and then Grand Island where Leona worked for the phone company. In January 1964 they moved to Dannebrog. The couple owned and operated Mac's Drive Inn for seven years. Leona also worked part time at Ray's Grocery in Dannebrog and was an Avon representative.
George and Leona moved to Grand Island in 2002.
George died on December 8, 2005 and Leona continued to live in Grand Island.
Leona was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church of Grand Island.
She enjoyed knitting, playing cards and loved animals, especially dogs and birds. They enjoyed going to a cabin at Johnson Lake for several years.
Leona had a good sense of humor and had the ability to be able to start a conversation and visit with anyone.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, George and Cindy McHargue, Jr. of Kearney; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Christine Bieber and Stacey and Tony Meyer, all of Grand Island and Jody & Doug Schult of Fort Collins, CO; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Arthur Jensen of Grand Island, George and Darlene Jensen of Cozad and Margaret Jensen of North Platte; and a sister, Helen Armour of Grand Island.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; a granddaughter, Sara Bieber Delgado; eight brothers, Alfred, Clarence, Raymond, Harold, Marvin, Harlan, Carl and Ernest Jensen and two sisters, Margaret Jensen Lukenbach and Myrtle Jensen.
