Laverne Jess

Laverne Jess, 94, of Scotia died Friday, November 9, 2007 at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Scotia. The Reverends Bruce Phillips and Martha Voigt will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Scotia. Visitation will be held on Monday, from 5 - 7 p.m. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the Scotia Methodist Church or to the Scotia EMT's.

Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Jess was born on October 14, 1913 on the family farm south of Scotia to John and Eva (Maxwell) Jess.

He graduated from Scotia High School in 1931. He moved to Wyoming in 1933 to work in the oil fields.

He was united in marriage to Laurine Nelson on March 10, 1936 in Hot Springs, SD. They moved back to the family farm in 1942. To this union was born six children, Larry, Laretta, Janet, Judy, Randy and Rodney.

Laverne farmed until 1959 when he bought the Scotia Hardware store. In 1968, he sold the store but continued his heating and air conditioning business. Laverne had numerous hobbies. He enjoyed playing cards and telling stories. He loved being around his family, especially during the holidays and birthdays. He also enjoyed family reunions and being around his relatives and friends.

He was a member of the Scotia United Methodist Church and the Rock Club of Grand Island.

Survivors include his wife, Laurine of Scotia; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Mary Ann Jess of Johnson Lake, NE, Randy and Debbie Jess of Tobias, NE and Rodney Jess of Scotia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Tom Fields of Sublette, KS and Judy and Leonard Williams of Grand Island; a son-in-law, Ron Wells and his wife Bonnie of Cotesfield; sixteen grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Laretta Wells; a grandson, Joe Einspahr; a great-grandson, Jacob Canfield; two sisters, Jessie Yost and Bernice Jess; and a brother, Elton Jess.
