Larry J. Hewitt, 61, of Boelus died Sunday, February 13, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville. Father Martin Egging will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday at the church with rosary at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be held in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Larry was born March 12, 1949 to Ray R. & Mary (George) Hewitt at Loup City, Nebraska. He was a son of an Air Force serviceman, traveling with his family as he grew up and attending schools. He spent summers in Boelus and he called Nebraska home.
Larry graduated from high school at Kecoughtan in Hampton, Virginia. He also attended college at University of Nebraska at Lincoln attending the Ag Campus for three years.
Larry was united in marriage to Kathleen Stubbs on November 22, 1969 in Rockville, Nebraska.
He farmed near Boelus and then worked as a custom wheat harvester for three years. Larry became a certified pipe welder and bought his own welding shop in 1979 in Boelus. He also did work as a welder for Gilbert Central working on the Calamus Dam Project in the 1980's. He did subcontracting work for Bamford Steel Corporation in Kearney and O'Hara's Plumbing Company in Grand Island.
Larry loved Husker football. He enjoyed playing softball in his younger years. He also enjoyed crossword puzzles and traveling all over the United States. Larry loved to have people over and barbeque.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville. He was a past member of the Boelus Fire Department and where he had served as Fire Chief.
Larry is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Boelus; two sons & daughter-in-law, Tim & Amy Hewitt of Kearney and Lance Hewitt of Elm Creek; one daughter & son-in-law, Wendy & Tim Schutte of Kearney; five grandsons, Heath, Alex and Ian Hewitt and Spencer & Jackson Schutte; two brothers & sisters-in-law, Gary & Eileen Hewitt and Mike & Bev Hewitt all of Rockville; two sisters & brother-in-law, Janis & Duane Lewandowski of Boelus and Julie Hewitt of Loup City.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Brandon & Luke Hewitt.
