Joseph P. Sturek, 78, of St. Paul died Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.



Services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul with Father Ray Kosmicki officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, from 5-8 p.m. with rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul.



Memorials are designated to the family's choice.



Joseph was born April 16, 1929 to Joseph E. & Bernice Jaworski Nowak Sturek at Cedar Rapids, Nebraska in the Timbercreek Township of Boone County.



He attended rural school in Greeley County and then district #23 in Howard County. He first attended high school in Wolbach and then in St. Paul where he graduated in 1946.



He first worked for the Burlington Railroad. He then worked for the Department of Roads for the State of Nebraska in the maintenance department. After recovering from an injury sustained on the job, he returned to the Department of Roads where he worked for nearly 46 years until his retirement in June 1993. Joe continued to live in St. Paul.



He made toys for his sisters and himself to play with when he was younger.



Joe had a great love for music. He played guitar with several bands and also played for residents in nursing and retirement homes and for others.



He enjoyed hunting, fishing and taking family members on his boat.



Joe was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus of St. Paul.



Survivors include three sisters and a brother-in-law, Eileen Kowalski of St. Paul, Bunny and David Gorecki and Mary Kezior all of Farwell; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Mona Sturek of Folsom, CA; a step-son, Jeff Lambert of Florida; a step-daughter, Judy Stanczyk and her husband David of Lincoln; four step-grandchildren, Hayley Mitchell, Heidi Hull, Brandon Stanczyk and Amanda Kotschwar; and four step-great-grandchildren; and an uncle, Ernest Nowak of Grand Island.



He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Joe Sturek.
