Joseph M. Murphy, 88, of St. Paul died September 12, 2011 at the V.A. Medical Center in Grand Island.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday at Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with military rites by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul. The Reverend Sid Bruggeman will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Joseph was born December 31, 1922 south of Ericson in Greeley County, NE to William and Dora (Baldwin) Murphy.
Joe was raised on a farm where he helped feed livestock, milk cows and pick corn. He received his schooling in various schools, including Riverdale, Horace, Scotia, Ord, and Fish Creek near Scotia.
After his schooling, he worked on various farms for a couple of years and then drove gravel trucks.
Joe entered the U.S. Army on February 13, 1943. Joe first served in the U.S. before going overseas during WWII where he landed in Sherbourg, France. His outfit walked across France, Germany, Austria and Italy, getting within a mile of their destination when the war ended. Joe reenlisted and served some of his second duty back in Germany. He received his discharge on November 21, 1946.
Joe was united in marriage to Mildred Sevenker on February 18, 1948 in St. Paul. To this union, two daughters were born, Linda and Patty. Joe worked as a coast to coast truck driver for a brewery for many years. He eventually retired and bought some lawn equipment where he did custom mowing and tilling in Grand Island.
Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, as well as Nebraska football games and race cars.
Joe lived in Parkside Plaza in St. Paul for four years before moving to Matelyn Retirement Community.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Walt Vargason of St. Paul and Patty and Gary Fey of Lincoln; two granddaughters, Cassie Fey and Jessie Giardini and her husband Jeremy; and one great-granddaughter, Olive Lee Giardini.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond and Leo Murphy and two sisters, Rosetta Cronk and Lois Fillinger.
