John R. Platek

John Platek, 90, of Farwell died Thursday, August 18, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, Nebraska.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Reverend Ray Kosmicki will officiate. Interment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with military honors by the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul. Visitation will from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Sunday with a Scripture service at 7:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

John was born March 6, 1921 to Henry & Caroline (Hurt) Platek in Farwell, Nebraska.

He attended rural school District 34 near Farwell and farmed with his parents.

John entered the United States Army on September 2, 1942 and was honorably discharged on October 18, 1945.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Nesiba on January 28, 1946 at St. Paul, Nebraska.

The couple farmed west of Farwell. After a tornado took their farm, they moved 1 ½ miles southwest where he farmed for the rest of his life. He also raised cattle and did carpentry work for about 20 years along with farming. He also drove school bus for 20 years at Farwell.

John enjoyed his time with family and friends especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved to go dancing and playing cards. He enjoyed farming and antique John Deere tractors.

He was a member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul and the Farwell Rural Fire Department for over 50 years. He served as secretary and was a member of the Farwell School Board as well as serving as President of District 78 School Board near Farwell. John also served as treasurer of the Czechoslovakian Cemetery Board and 75 year member of WFLA Lodge 152 where he served as treasurer.

John is survived by his wife Dorothy of Farwell; a son & daughter-in-law, Daryl & Marie Platek of St. Paul; a daughter & son-in-law, Cindy & Ken Andersen of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Jeanna Reimers and special friend Layne Studley, Michael & Cami Platek, Jeffrey & Kelli Platek, Lisa & Nick Barcel, and Laura Andersen & friend John Vrtiska; six grandchildren, Rylie, Ella, Claire, Sadye, Taylor and Addilyn; a sister Marlene Wolinski of Farwell; a brother-in-law, Clifford Stefanowicz of Grand Island; and nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Lonnie Jerome; a sister Barbara Stefanowicz and a brother-in-law, Don Wolinski.
