John R. Petersen, 88, of Boelus died Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Robert Carlson, Jr. will officiate.
Burial will be held in Loup Fork Cemetery near Boelus with military rites by Schipman-Mogensen American Legion Post #201 of Boelus. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Boelus Fire Department & EMT's.
John was born February 16, 1923 to Christian & Loretta (Christensen) Petersen in Boelus, Nebraska.
John grew up near Boelus and attended rural school District #28 near Boelus. He graduated from Boelus High School in 1941.
He was baptized in the Lutheran faith.
John entered the United States Navy in January 1941 and was honorably discharged March 1946.
John was united in marriage to Esther Zamora on March 23, 1944 in Los Angeles, California.
The couple lived in Los Angeles and John worked at Douglas Aircraft and then the Los Angeles Police Department from 1947-1977. He retired and took care of his wife until her death and continued to live in the Los Angeles area. In 1997, John moved to Boelus and continued to live there.
John enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as traveling.
He was a member of the Schipman-Mogensen American Legion Post #201 of Boelus.
John is survived by a special friend Jeanine Lemburg of Boelus; a step daughter Esther Arce of Diamond Bar, California; numerous step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren; one brother & sister-in-law, Clarence & Ruby Petersen of Boelus and one brother-in-law, Gaylord Schade of Hastings.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Esther on July 5, 1996, a step daughter, Irene Mondragon, two sisters, Evelyn Quest and Miriam Schade and an infant sister LeMay Petersen and four brothers, Herman, Richard, Stanley and Gilbert Petersen.
