John J. "Jack" Hetfield

October 12, 1939 — March 29, 2010

John J. "Jack" Hetfield, 70, of Cairo died March 29, 2010 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Dannebrog. The Reverend Robert Carlson, Jr. will officiate. Interment will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Taylor Cemetery at Taylor, Nebraska. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or to the Cairo QRT's.

John was born October 12, 1939 at Loup County to Wayne & Frances (Starke) Hetfield.

He grew up on a ranch outside Taylor.

Jack was united into marriage to Beverly Markvicka on June 7, 1959 in North Loup. He ranched for a few years by Burwell after the couple first married.

The couple moved to Omaha while he attended mechanic school. He worked as a mechanic for several years while living in Burwell, Sargent, Omaha and Phillips areas. He also worked at Sperry New Holland for some time. The couple then moved to Dannebrog in 1974 and then in 1986 they moved to Cairo where they currently reside.

After working at New Holland for 20 plus years, John retired and began ranching and farming full time. When Jack's father passed away, he and Beverly bought part of the family herd and began farming and ranching. Jack loved to ranch, following in his father's foot steps.

Jack's other pride and joy was his grandchildren and great grandchild. He loved to tease his grandkids. He also enjoyed his cattle, working on machinery, and traveling. Holidays and family were very important to him. Jack enjoyed attending his children and grandchildren's activities.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Beverly of Cairo; four daughters and sons-in-law, Beth & Larry Smith of Grand Island, Becky & Brad Rathman of Farwell, Cindy & Kenny Williams of Boelus and Cheryl & Jerome Hulinsky of St. Paul; one son, John Jr., of St. Paul; eight grandchildren, Matt and Kristen Smith, BJ & Mandy Rathman, Cheyenne Hurlburt, Mackenzie Hetfield, Jordyn & Jarred Hulinsky; one great-grandchild, Justin Rathman; two sisters and brother-in-law, Maxine Starke of Plymouth, MN and Roberta & Bob Lucas of Lincoln; two brothers-in-law, Hank Markvicka and his wife Linda of North Loup and Jim Markvicka of Ericson; two sister-in-law, Janet Rush and her husband Glen and Mary Schmeits and her husband Gene all of Ericson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant brothers.
