John Friesen, 97, of Scotia died Monday, March 21, 2011 at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Pastor Elgin Koehn will officiate. Interment will be held in Cedar Hills Mennonite Cemetery east of Scotia. Visitation will be held from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Church of God and Christ Mennonite-Cedar Hills Congregation of Scotia.

John was born March 13, 1914 in Langdon, North Dakota to George and Margaretha (Toews) Friesen.

He was raised and received his education in the Langdon area.

After his education, he farmed with his parents.

John was united in marriage to Barbara Erbskorn on June 22, 1947 in Pettisville, Ohio.

The couple lived in the Langdon area where John farmed until 1966 when they moved to Grafton, ND. John then worked at the North Dakota State School for the Mentally Handicapped in Grafton for 22 years. At that time he retired.

In 1999, the couple moved to Scotia where they lived until the fall of 2006 when they moved to Matelyn Retirement Community in St. Paul.

His wife, Barbara died on March 20, 2007.

John and his wife enjoyed traveling and meeting people. Traveling to Brazil was a highlight for the couple. John liked to work in carpentry and fix furniture.

He was a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite-Cedar Hills Congregation of Scotia.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ray Penner of Scotia; seven grandchildren, Vickie and husband Arlin Warkentine of Liberty, KY, Keven Penner and wife Jackie of Barron, WI, Ryan Penner and wife Starla of El Campo, TX, Arlen Penner and wife Jessica of Lavonia, GA, Virgil Penner of Hartwell, GA, Monica and husband Rylan Koehn of Scotia, Laura and husband Doug Koehn of Madrid, NE currently serving as missionaries in Bangladesh; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara; infant daughter, BeEtta Fay; five brothers, Ben, Jake, George, Abe and Pete Friesen and a sister, Margaret Goossen.
