John A. "Jack" Dinsdale

August 15, 1918 — November 25, 2010

John Alfred (Jack) Dinsdale, 92, of Grand Island, formerly of Palmer, passed away at home surrounded by family on Thanksgiving, November 25, 2010.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Palmer. The Reverends Warthen Israel and Lonnie Logan will officiate. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer with military honors by the Burton Beyer American Legion Post #120 of Palmer. There will not be any visitation.

Memorials are suggested to The United Methodist Church in Palmer in care of the Merrick County Foundation, Central City, NE 68826 or The We Care Fund in care of Marcia Bolling, Box 275 Central City, NE 68826.

Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Dinsdale was born in Palmer, Nebraska to George and Rena (Nicholas) Dinsdale on August 15, 1918. He graduated from Palmer High School in 1936.

His college career at the University of Nebraska was interrupted by World War II. He entered the United States Army in June of 1942 and was discharged in January, 1946. During his time in the Army he met Gretchen Poggemeyer at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. They were married in March, 1945. Following WWII he returned to Palmer, Nebraska where he joined his Father and Uncle in the family business. In 1948 his brother, Roy, came back to Palmer and the two have been partners in the cattle, farming and banking businesses for the past 62 years.

Jack was Vice Chairman of Pinnacle Bancorp., past board member of Stuhr Museum, Goodwill Industries of Central Nebraska and a 55 year bond holder of Fonner Park. He was a lifelong member of the Palmer United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. He was also a lifetime member of American Legion Post #120 in Palmer. Jack was a member of the Grand Island Saddle Club and a 55 year member of Riverside Golf Club. He and his brother Roy were recently honored by the University of Nebraska School of Business for their Lifetime Achievement Award.

He & his brother have been active in sponsoring and raising money for the "We Care Fund" which makes $400.00 available to each Nebraska National Guardsmen/women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan during the holidays.

In 1998 Jack had the vision of a memorial park dedicated to Veterans of the Palmer Area. He designed and funded this project which was completed and dedicated under his close supervision.

Jack is survived by his wife Gretchen of 65 years, his son Tom (wife Kim) of Grand Island, Ne; his daughter Lynn (husband Sam Marchese) of Omaha; four grandchildren: Elizabeth White & her husband Ross, Isabelle Gronbach and her husband Michael and great granddaughter Aralyn White all of Chicago, Jackson and Michael Dinsdale, Grand Island, NE; a brother Roy Dinsdale and wife Gloria of Palmer, Nebraska; and sister in law Barbara Dinsdale of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by parents George and Rena Dinsdale and two brothers George and his wife (Elizabeth) and Dr. Howard Dinsdale.
