Jerry D. Burkhardt

November 18, 1935 — March 4, 2011

Jerry Burkhardt, 75, of rural Palmer died Friday, March 4, 2011 at his home, where he was surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Don Lovell will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday at the Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. Interment will be held in Rose Hill Cemetery in Palmer.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Jerry was born November 18, 1935 to Herman & Mae (Zlomke) Burkhardt in northwest of Palmer in Howard County.

He attended rural schools in Howard and Merrick County.

He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Palmer.

Jerry was united in marriage to Leola Miller on December 15, 1956 in Fullerton, Nebraska. They made their home northwest of Palmer in Howard County where he was born and raised.

Jerry took over the family farm at the age of 17 when his parents moved to town and he bought the farm from then in 1966. He was very active on the farm until his death and had a reputation for his "perfect haystacks".

Jerry was well known for his beautiful artwork during his school days, as a teenager he worked for the Palmer Lumber yard, Lambert Ranch, helping the neighbors and worked for the government for one dollar a day measuring the Loup River water levels.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, his animals, hunting and fishing, playing cards, checkers, horseshoes and gardening.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Leola of Palmer; his children Elaine & Rick Safarik of Farwell, Vicki & Jeff Fellers, Judy & Keith Bennett, Don Burkhards, Dean Burkhardt and friend Erica Penner, Derry Burkhardt and friend Crystal Weisshaar all of Palmer and Diane & Rick Peregoy of St. Paul; twenty grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; one brother & sister-in-law, Vern & Arla Burkhardt of Central City; five sisters & brothers-in-law, Gladys & Chick Lawrence of Valleys, California, Betty & Dick Wetjen of Columbus, Karen & Ed Smith of Wellsville, KS, Shirley Kosch & Larry of Central City, Nancy Allen of Reno, NV; one sister-in-law, Lorene Burkhardt of Central City; one uncle Ernest & Mabel Burkhardt of Palmer; many cousins, nieces and nephews and a lifetime best friend Don Knapp.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter Jolene Mae, grandparents Emil & Elisa (Sunken) Zlomke, Paul & Hildegard (Heinzig) Burkhardt, one brother Melvin Burkhardt, two brothers-in-law, Larry Kosch and Richard Allen.
