Janice "Jan" M. (Shinrock) Swigart

Janice “Jan” M. (Shinrock) Swigart was born September 4, 1930 in Omaha to Fred and Mae (Charnquist) Shinrock.  She entered into rest on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at Brookefield Park in St. Paul at the age of 87 years.

Jan has chosen to donate her body to the University of Nebraska Medical School.  A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul.  The Reverend Russ Anderson and Reverend Thomas Hyde will be officiating.

A time to greet the family will be held on Friday, March 9, 2018 from 5-7 P.M. at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul United Methodist Church or the Howard County Medical Center.

Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is assisting the family.

Jan attended Lothrop and Saratoga Elementary schools and graduated from North High School, all in Omaha.

Jan was united in marriage to W. Russell Swigart on March 14, 1953 in Auburn, NE.  To this union, five children were born.

During her lifetime, she worked at Eckstrom Cleaners and Max I. Walker Cleaners while she was in high school and she also worked at Warren-Douglas Chemical Company in Omaha.

She served as church secretary at the Central Park Congregational Church in Omaha, the Covenant Evangelical Church in Wakefield and for 17 years at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul.

She sang in the choirs at all three of the churches.

Jan was a stay at home mom while raising her children and was active in the PTA in Omaha and Band Boosters in St. Paul.  One activity which she was very proud of was being president of the Women’s Association at Central Park Congregational Church as were both her mother and oldest daughter.

Moving to St. Paul in 1983 where her husband was the hospital administrator for 18 years.

Jan was active in the Howard County Community Hospital Auxiliary and sang for many years in the St. Paul Community Christmas Chorus.

Jan and Russ lived in Omaha, St. Joseph, Mo, Rockford, IL, Wakefield, NE and St. Paul during their life together.

Survivors include her husband, W. Russell Swigart of St. Paul; four children and spouses, Karen (Frank) Zymball of Blue Springs, MO, Todd (Jackie) Swigart of Phoenix, Tracy (Von) Townsend of Papillion, NE, and Kristin Bartholomew of Altamonte, FL, a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Swigart of Victor, NY; 11 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 16 step great-grandchildren, two brothers, Fred (Nancy) Shinrock of Bluffton, SC and Brian (Nancy) Shinrock of Omaha, a sister, Iris Wilson of Newport News, VA; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents and a son, Scott Swigart.
