Janice A. Garbers

Janice A. Garbers, 75, of St. Paul passed away peacefully into the presence of the Lord, at her home on Monday, September 10, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Friday at Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Reverend Mike Reiners will officiate. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 5 ? 8 p.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the St. Paul Library, Heartland Lutheran School or Peace Lutheran Church.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Garbers was born March 12, 1932 at the family home in Farwell to Albert and Hilda (Baxter) Horky.
Janice was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. She was raised in Farwell and attended school in a rural school north of Farwell and then Farwell High School. She graduated as valedictorian from Farwell High School in 1949. Janice then attended Kearney State College where she earned her teaching endorsement.
She taught school for six years in Howard County in one-room country schools.
She was united in marriage to Clarence W. Ritz on June 18, 1955 in Nysted. To this union was born 4 children, Neil, Gayle, Cheryl and Clark. The couple lived in various states while the natural gas pipeline was built. In 1962, they settled in St. Paul where they raised their family. In addition being a homemaker, Janice was also a bookkeeper for Ritz Feed Incorporated.
She was united in marriage to Harlan Garbers on January 20, 2001 in Grand Island. The couple lived in St. Paul.
Janice had many loves; including attending her grandchildren?s activities and baking decorated birthday cakes for her grandchildren.
She also enjoyed bowling, traveling, playing cards and Nebraska Cornhusker sports, especially football.
She was a past member of Christ Lutheran Church in St. Paul. She was very active in the church including Ladies Aid where she served as president, a Bible school coordinator, served on the building committee and volunteered in the church office. Currently Janice was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island. She was a member of the Peace Corp, which is an adult Bible Study, and a member of a Peace Lutheran Church Circle. She helped others by teaching English at Cristo Cordero in Grand Island.
Janice also served on the St. Paul Library Board, the Howard County Hospital Auxiliary, Election Board, was a leader in the 4-H, cub scouts, and brownies.
Survivors include her husband, Harlan of St. Paul; two sons and daughters-in-law, Neil and Mary Ritz of Norfolk and Clark and Janet Ritz of St. Libory; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gayle and Kent Lacey of Scottsbluff and Cheryl and Jeff Cox of Holdrege; twelve grandchildren, Melissa Korth and her husband Ross, Luke and Logan Ritz, Lauren, Allison and Grant Lacey, Mallory, Morgan and Emily Cox, Jon Ritz and his wife Betsy, Kelsey and Jordan Ritz; one great-granddaughter, Karlie Jerabek; one brother and sister-in-law, James and Betty Horky of St. Paul; a step-daughter, Tammy Garbers of Elizabeth, CO; an aunt, Ethel Madsen of St. Paul; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
