Jim (James Harold) Snow died on April 10, 2015 at Brookfield Park in Saint Paul, NE after a seven month battle with cancer.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul at 10:30 am, Wednesday, April 15th with Phil LaRoe officiating. The family will greet friends and family on Tuesday April 14th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at the church.
Inurnment will take place after the service at Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul with military rites provided by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church, St. Paul Rotary Club, Royal Coachmen Car Club or the family, to be designated at a later time.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul is assisting the family.
Jim was born on January 10, 1945 in Beatrice, NE to the Rev. Harold L. and Louise (Asell) Snow.
He spent his early years living in Blue Springs, NE before the family moved to Bancroft, NE when he was three years old. In 1959, when he was a freshman, the family relocated to St. Paul, NE where his father was the minister of the First Presbyterian Church.
Jim graduated from St. Paul High School with the class of 1963, where he was active in all sports and school activities. He attended the University of Nebraska for two years, before joining the United States Navy. He went to boot camp in San Diego and received his Navy training in Air Traffic Control in Georgia. He was stationed in Puerto Rico. He then was transferred to Corpus Christi, TX. His training in the Navy led to his career with the Federal Aviation Administration.
While living in Corpus Christi, he met Helen L. Hunt and they were married on April 4, 1970 in Ingleside, Texas. During their 42 years of marriage Jim was employed by the FAA and received several advancements as he moved from one location to another. He was employed in the control towers in Des Moines, IA and St. Louis, MO and he taught in the air traffic school in Oklahoma City, OK. He was in the tower in Salina and Wichita, KS. He was in management positions while in Omaha, NE, Kansas City, MO, San Diego, CA, and Sacramento, CA. Jim was the Air Traffic Manager at the Northern California TRACON from 1997 to 2002.
He retired in 2002 and returned to St. Paul where he lived the rest of his life.
Jim became involved with several organizations. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he had been ordained as an Elder. He took charge of mowing and snow removal as long as he was physically able. He was a charter member of the Royal Coachmen Car Club, a member of the St. Paul Rotary club serving as President in 2010 -11 and was "Rotarian of the year in 2013".
Jim enjoyed his RV and loved traveling with a group of friends to many camp sites across Nebraska. He served as the President of the camping group. He served as the Secretary of the Howard County Fair Board for a short time and was on the board of the Howard County Historical Society.
Jim was member of the City Council for four years and was elected Mayor of St. Paul 2010-2014. He tried to always listen to everyone's ideas and suggestions, always trying to make St. Paul a better place to live. Jim was a member of the Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 in St. Paul for forty-four years.
He loved to be busy and was always available to assist anyone who needed his help for any project in St. Paul. He truly enjoyed living in his "hometown".
Jim is survived by his children and grandchildren Keri and Mitch Towne their children Daelin, Madelyn and Hayden of Lowry City, MO; Kyle and Kim Snow, their children Hunter, Connor, and Abbigail of Sacramento, CA, Kent and Rhianna Snow, their children Tyler, JD and Averi of Sacramento, CA and Kelly Snow of Lincoln, NE. Jim is also survived by his companion, Jan Skala, of Lincoln and her children & grandchildren Steve and Jenny Skala and Breanna of Omaha, Stephanie and Brad Devall and Ashlynn and Alec of Lincoln, NE.
His sibling and spouses are Dave and Connie Snow of St. Paul, NE, Janet and Robin Elstermeier of St. Paul, NE and Marc and Pam Snow of Ashland, NE and several nieces and nephews. Jim is also survived by an aunt, Helen Heath of Lake City, FL and an uncle, Leon Snow of LeSueur, MN as well as many cousins and his faithful dog, Meg.
Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Helen, who died on May 2, 2012, as well as his parents and grandparents.
