James V. McPhillips, 75, of Grand Island died Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. A book signing and an opportunity to greet the family will be held on Friday, January 21, 2011 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service led by Rev. Jeff Hale at 7:00 p.m. at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. There will not be any visitation, Mr. McPhillips was cremated.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. McPhillips was born July 28, 1935 in Grand Island to Thomas L. and Naomi K. (Toky) McPhillips.

Jim went to work for Northwestern Public Service at the age of 16. On June 12, 1958 Jim entered the US Army where he served until receiving his discharge on May 31, 1964. Upon receiving his discharge her returned to civilian life and returned to work for the gas company.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Collins on March 19, 1970 in St. Paul. Jim retired from the gas company after 40 years of service.

Jim wanted to spend more time hunting and fishing with his wife. Jim was a real outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He also liked to tinker around with old cars and rebuilt and painted a Ford tractor for his son. He really liked to spend time with friends and family. If you ever met Jim, you had a friend for life.

Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Hank Obermeier of North Platte; two sons and daughter-in-law, James T. Pauly of Kearney and David and Sandra Collins of Phillips and a daughter, Donna Collins of Burwell; two grandsons, Daniel and Dustin Collins and six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who loved him very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy on Nov. 2, 2007; and his loving dog Chrissy.
