Helen M. Schlueter

Helen Madeline (Vincik) Schlueter, 95, was called home to our Lord on October 1, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.

Helen’s wish was to have her body donated to the Nebraska Anatomical Board through the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 18, 2017 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Palmer.  Reverend Thomas Clark will officiate.  A gathering of family and friends will be on Saturday, November 18, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Greenway Funeral Home in Palmer is in charge or arrangements.

Helen was born to Frank and Sarah (Hiett) Vincik on January 5, 1922 in the Gage Valley Community, southwest of Palmer. At the age of two her parents moved to the Midway Community, west of St. Paul, Nebraska. Helen Attended District 8 rural school and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1939. After high school, she received her teaching certificate through a teachers college in Kearney. She taught rural schools in Howard County for five years.

On January 1, 1944, she was united in marriage to John Schlueter of Palmer at St. John’s Lutheran Church. To this union three children were born. John (Jack), Sarah (Sally), and Nancy. Her entire married life was spent on the farm two miles south of Palmer. She became a confirmed member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in 1944. She taught Sunday school and Saturday school. She was a substitute teacher and a teacher helper in Palmer School. She later drove school bus for the school for seven years.

She took classes and became a Care Staff Member (CSM) and worked in a St. Paul nursing home. When the Coolidge nursing home opened in Palmer, she was the first night nurse. She worked night duty at Coolidge Nursing Center for 12 years.  Helen belonged to St. Johns Ladies Aid from 1946 until her death. She was a member of the Palmer South Side Extension Club for 42 years until it disbanded. She later joined the Gage Valley Extension Club.

Helen enjoyed singing in her church choir for many years. Helen loved reading, sewing, baking, gardening and canning, bowling, fishing, and travelling with her husband. Helen left her family with numerous landscapes that she had painted over the years.

Helen lived out on the family farm until November 2016 when she moved to Brookfield Park in St. Paul, Nebraska.

She leaves her daughters, Sally (Gary) Pichler of Winside, NE; Nancy (Rick) Etherton of Palmer, NE; daughter-in-law, Sandi Schlueter of Palmer, NE; eight grandchildren and spouses, Jackie (Joe) Liske, Stephanie (Gary) Peace, Jennifer (Brad) Wieck, Kelly (Brian) Nelson, Kari (Jeff) Washburn, Erin (Darin) Ehlers, Andy Etherton, Jacob (Amanda) Etherton; ten great-grandchildren, some great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her step-sister, Vanice Bahensky.

She is proceeded in death by her parents; husband, John in 1988; a son, Jack in 1996; and infant grandson Patrick Etherton in 1975.

Memorials suggested to Palmer Fire & Rescue Department and St. John’s Lutheran Church of Palmer.
