Harold A. “Hal” Payne, 80, of St. Paul died Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. Tom Schroeder will officiate. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery with military honors by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 of St. Paul and the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard.
Visitation will be on Friday, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice.
Mr. Payne was born June 5, 1935 in Greenville, PA to Andy and Tilda Marie (Johnson) Payne.
He was raised in Nebraska.
Hal attended school and graduated from Grand Island Senior High.
He was united in marriage to Ellen Johnson on July 28, 1955 at Custer, SD and the couple recently celebrated their 60th anniversary.
The couple spent 20 years of their married life traveling in the Air Force. Hal retired as a master sergeant in 1978.
His second career was at Honeywell in Phoenix. He retired from Honeywell in 1994.
He and Ellen decided to come home to Nebraska.
Hal had several horses and he enjoyed racing. He loved his Corgi Shelly.
Hal was a great husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was loyal to his Nation and the United States Air Force.
His hobby was playing cards.
He was a member of Carl Mogensen American Legion Post #119 and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of St. Paul.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen of St. Paul; a son, Russell of St. Paul; two grandchildren, Cody Payne, Mandi Payne and her fiancé, Josh Slater; and a great-granddaughter, Charlotte, all of Phoenix; a brother, Andy Payne of Tulare, CA; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Tilda Marie and Ed Wolfe of Joplin, MO and Julie Jacobs of Denver.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Allen and Art Payne.
