Halis Odabasi, 79, of St. Paul died February 7, 2011 at the Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.
Halis's request was to be cremated.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Reverend Jay Vetter will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood Cemetery in St. Paul at a later date.
Memorials are suggested to the Howard County Medical Center.
Halis was born December 10, 1931 to Turan & Zemhanur (Engin) Odabasi in Gurun, Turkey.
He served in the Turkish Navy from 1955-1957.
Halis came to the United States in 1960 to pursue graduate studies, eventually earning Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Atomic Physics from the University of Colorado.
He was united in marriage to Marian Maticka on July 10, 1965 in St. Paul, Nebraska.
Halis taught physics at Bogazici University in Instanbul Turkey, Central Missouri State University at Warrensburg, Missouri, East Carolina University at Greenville, North Carolina, and the University of Mississippi in Oxford.
He was co-author of a physics textbook called "Atomic Structure." Halis was also an editor of the books "Environmental Problems and Their International Implications," "Topics in Mathematical Physics," "Topics in Modern Physics," and "Selected Popular Writings of E. U. Condon."
Halis was a member of the American Physics Society and the Turkish Physics Society.
He enjoyed gardening and raising flowers especially roses. He also loved photography. In his younger years he enjoyed hiking.
Halis is survived by his wife, Marian of St. Paul; one son & daughter-in-law, Turan & Cynthia Odabasi of Lincoln; two granddaughters, Cassandra & Rachel; three brothers, Yilmaz Odabasi, Necdet Odabasi and Kadir Odabasi all of Turkey and one sister, Perihan Pancaroglu of Turkey and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother and an infant sister.
